1. Tamil - அடக்கம்- Politeness

Its a irony that in a country of more than 1200 regional languages it s English that bind us together. I am not implying in any way that a language is better than other but being an avid Kannadasan fan i shall document my thoughts on தமிழ் language. All the errors including translations are mine.

Let us talk about differnet topics in each blog and the theme for today is "Politeness"

Politeness -

English Translation

Politeness for a being leads to heaven
Otherwise destined to darkness

Being polite ( self control) will take a man to heaven. Heaven here means a life filled with peace and surrounded by well learned people. If someone is surrounded by wise men, he or she would always be guided in the right direction which would lead to success and happiness which is nothing but heaven. If someone becomes self centered he would not listen to others and thereby become ignorant ( darkness)

The sea of milk where the lord resides
To lick and drink empty; a cat desires
Similar is my wish to sing all virtues
Of King Rama's never ending glory

Kamabar says singing rama's glory can never be complete as His glory can never be quantified What he has written is like a cat that desires to drink the par kadal ( milk sea) where lord Vishnu resides. How pityful is the cat's desire and how ignorant it is and his efforts are very similar to that of the cat

If you are polite when your go up your life, lives around you will respect you. Truth is love and extreme politeness is a virtue
Interpretation

Thiruvalluvar says one should be polite otherwise his life would be filled with darkness

Kambar's virtue is seen when he compares himself with the cat the desires to do the impossible

Kannadasan has not stated that you have to be polite. He says it is essential to be polite when you go up in life. It implies that you have to be polite at all times but it is of utmost importance when your stature grows. Because it is when you move up in life you acquire wealth, power, stature in the society that you tend to become self centered. So he stresses that it is during those times that one has to be polite and if one is able to be polite at that time he or she will definitely be polite at other times.
